Dear Parent/Legal Guardian:
We are extremely proud of the quality of staff in the Nye County School District and in particular our staff at Hafen Elementary School. All of our teachers are fully licensed by the State of Nevada and regularly participate in professional development activities to enhance their teaching skills. In short, our school is staffed by dedicated and licensed teachers who are committed to ensuring all students receive the highest quality education possible.
As part of the “No Child Left Behind Act” (NCLB Act) passed by Congress, teachers who teach the core academic subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, or the Arts are required to demonstrate that they meet the criteria defined in the law for “highly qualified” teachers. We are also required by law to notify parents if their child has been taught for four or more weeks by an individual who does not yet meet the “highly qualified” (HQ) teacher requirements. At this time, all Hafen Elementary School staff are highly qualified and we are very proud of that.
The Nevada Education Performance System requires the NV Department of Education to use the NV School Performance Framework (NSPF) for classifying school performance using such measures as student proficiency, student growth data, and gap reduction data. Under this system, each school’s designation is based on a 5-Star rating system with the highest performing schools receiving 5 stars, while the lowest performing stars receive 1 star. These determinations are the trigger for the differentiated system of recognition, accountability, and support. According to 2013-2014 and the most recently released data, Hafen Elementary School is a 1-Star school.
A 1-Star School is a school that has room for substantial improvement in whole school proficiency and growth. The required engagement of district leadership will support the school in improvement planning and implementation of specified and effective practices. Identified 1-Star Schools are among the lowest achieving schools in Nevada based upon whole school proficiency and growth over a number of years. The engagement of district leadership is required to support the school in focused school improvement planning and frequent monitoring of the school’s implementation of its focused performance plan. The impact to staff can include personnel changes among teaching faculty and/or leadership, and will include collaboration between districts and local education associations to negotiate collective bargaining agreements. The school has prescribed scheduling and use of core instructional materials.
The 1-Star School Performance Plan requires intense district and state involvement and oversight. The plan must incorporate specified effective strategies and interventions based on identified academic achievement need including growth of individual students and subgroups. In collaboration with the District, the Nevada Department of Education will provide differentiated support to the school to implement and ensure the success of the plan. The plan must be developed utilizing the statewide Student Achievement Gap Elimination (SAGE) planning process.
We must continue to improve in the areas of Math and Language, while increasing parental involvement. Hafen Elementary Staff will be diligent and focused so we are able to obtain a 5-Star rating.
Most importantly, we want to let you know, in the strongest terms possible, that the entire staff at Hafen Elementary School cares about your child’s education. We greatly appreciate your continues support for the Nye County School District and our school. We invite you to contact Sheena Barnes, Human Resources Director for NCSD, at 727-7743, if you have any questions or would like additional information on the “highly qualified” teacher requirements. In addition, if you would like more information regarding the Nevada School Performance Framework (NSPF), please go to www.doe.nv.gov. Thank you.
